Monticello Wine Tour - Best Winery Region - Wine Region of the Year, 2023 - Wine Enthusiast
Often hailed as the cradle of American wine, Charlottesville boasts a rich viticultural legacy dating back to the era of Thomas Jefferson, who called the region home.
"Jefferson envisioned Charlottesville as a hub for grape cultivation, striving to establish Virginia as a contender in the global wine arena," says Brantley Ussery, director of marketing and public relations at Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau. However, Jefferson's aspirations were thwarted by unsuccessful grape-growing endeavors, leaving his dream unfulfilled.
Nevertheless, in the 1970s, a new wave of vintners embarked on a quest to identify grape varieties suited to the region's cool climate, potentially realizing Jefferson's vision. The formation of the Jeffersonian Wine Grape Grower's Society (JWGGS) in the 1980s marked a pivotal moment, pooling local industry knowledge and resources.
Today, the Monticello Wine Trail links over 40 wineries in and around Charlottesville, offering an array of acclaimed wines—from traditional Bordeaux blends to avant-garde Chenin Blancs and lesser-known Petite Manseng varietals—making the area a haven for wine enthusiasts.
Charlottesville places a strong emphasis on sustainable viticulture, with wineries collectively adapting to climate change and spearheading initiatives such as solar panel installations, composting programs, and biodiversity conservation in vineyards, while also experimenting with hybrid grape varieties.
"The ethos of collaboration pervades the wineries and winemakers along the trail, nurturing innovation and excellence," explains Ussery. This collaborative spirit contributes to the production of high-quality wines that have earned recognition both nationally and internationally.
Moreover, Charlottesville prides itself on being inclusive, welcoming newcomers to the wine scene with open arms. "We want visitors to our wine region to feel embraced and understand that there are no rigid rules for enjoying wine," adds Ussery, highlighting the region's thriving ecotourism.
In recognition of its historical significance in American wine and its commitment to diversity and inclusivity in winemaking, Wine Enthusiast is honored to present Charlottesville with the 2023 Wine Region of the Year Wine Star Award.
